ESD Polyimide Tape: How to Control Static Electricity in Electronics Manufacturing
By Martin Chan | Technical Sales Lead at Hong Kong Huilink Trading Co., Limited
The Hidden Danger in Cleanrooms: Triboelectric Discharge
When operators unwind a roll of standard amber Kapton tape at high speeds, friction generates static charges exceeding 5,000 Volts to 10,000 Volts. If this tape is peeled near sensitive PCB components during wave solder masking, electrostatic discharge (ESD) can instantly rupture gate oxides in MOSFETs and microprocessors—causing silent, latent field failures that slip past factory testing.
In modern Surface Mount Technology (SMT), semiconductor packaging, and cleanroom assembly, thermal masking tape must do more than withstand 260°C peak reflow heat—it must actively dissipate static charges. ESD Anti-Static Polyimide Tape bridges high-temperature resistance with controlled electrical conductivity to protect sensitive components.
1. How ESD Polyimide Tape Suppresses Static Voltage
Unlike conventional polyimide film, anti-static polyimide tape (such as Huilink Model 2550 ESD) undergoes specialized anti-static treatment on either the polyimide film backing, the silicone adhesive layer, or both:
- Backing Anti-Static Treatment: A nano-scale conductive polymer coating maintains surface resistivity between 107 Ω and 109 Ω, allowing static charge to dissipate safely to ground instead of accumulating.
- Low Peeling Voltage Adhesive: Modifying the silicone adhesive reduces triboelectric charge generation during tape peel-off to < 50 Volts, preventing arcing to nearby gold fingers or circuit traces.
| Technical Parameter | Standard Specification (Huilink Model 2550 ESD) | Test Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Backing / Total Thickness | 0.025mm Polyimide Film / 0.050 ± 0.002mm Total | GB/T 7125-2014 |
| Surface Resistivity | 107 ~ 109 Ω | Surface Ohmmeter Standard |
| Adhesion to Steel | 550 ± 50 gf/25mm | GB/T 2792-2014 |
| Heat Resistance | 260°C for 30 minutes (Pass, Zero Residue) | Thermal Chamber Test |
| Dielectric Breakdown Voltage | 4.5 kV | GB/T 1408.1-2006 |
| Tensile Strength & Elongation | ≥ 150 MPa / ≥ 100% | GB/T 30776-2014 |
2. High-Impact Applications in SMT Manufacturing
A. PCB Gold Finger Protection in Wave Soldering
Protects edge connectors and gold contact fingers during wave soldering. The anti-static backing prevents static accumulation while the high-temperature silicone resists molten solder up to 260°C without leaving adhesive residue.
B. Semiconductor & Microchip Packaging
Used during wafer dicing, IC carrier tray securing, and component reel packing where static discharge could ruin sensitive gate dielectric layers.
C. Flex Circuit (FPC) & Battery Module Stiffener Mounting
Provides ground continuity and static dissipation when securing flexible printed circuits inside smartphone enclosures and EV lithium battery modules.

To preserve the 107–109 Ω surface resistivity and prevent release agent migration over time, follow these cleanroom storage guidelines:
- Controlled Environment: Store raw rolls at 23°C ± 2°C and 65% Relative Humidity in well-ventilated, dry storage areas away from direct sunlight.
- Shelf Life: Standard storage life is 6 months from manufacture date. Beyond 6 months, verify surface resistivity using a calibrated surface ohmmeter prior to critical SMT runs.
- Clean Removal Technique: Peel tape at a 90-degree angle at steady speed to maintain zero static generation during post-soldering masking removal.
