How to Test Adhesive Tape: Tack, Cohesion & 180° Peel Strength Standards

    FAQ

Testing Methods How do you measure tape initial tack, holding power cohesion, and 180° peel adhesion strength?

Our quality control laboratory evaluates pressure-sensitive tapes (Polyimide, PET, Hot Fix, Aluminum Foil) across three core physical metrics following international ASTM and PSTC standards:

Initial Tack (PSTC-6): Rolling Ball Method measuring the distance a standard steel ball travels on inclined adhesive film (Ball No. 1 to No. 32).
Holding Power (PSTC-7): Static shear test measuring displacement time under a constant 1kg hanging load at 23°C or elevated temperatures.
180° Peel Strength (ASTM D3330): Tensile test pulling tape from a standard mirror-polished stainless steel plate at 300 mm/min peel rate (N/25mm or oz/in).
IQC Cross-Verification: Full lab testing records generated for each master roll lot before slitting and packing.

Custom Adhesive Tuning Can adhesion properties be customized for specialized substrates like silicone liners or rough plastics?

Yes. We offer custom adhesive coating formulations including cross-linked silicone, acrylic, and rubber pressure-sensitive systems. Peel strength can be tuned from low-tack removable levels (1-3 N/25mm) up to high-tack structural bonding (>15 N/25mm) to match specific substrate textures, thermal demands, or clean-removal requirements.
