Polyimide Tape vs Kapton Tape

Polyimide Tape vs Kapton Tape

What is Polyimide Tape & Kapton Tape?

Polyimide tape and Kapton tape are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences in branding and material composition.

Polyimide tape is a general term for high-performance adhesive tapes made from polyimide film, known for extreme heat resistance (up to 260°C / 500°F), electrical insulation, and chemical stability

Kapton tape is a branded version of polyimide tape developed by DuPont™, which has become synonymous with high-quality polyimide films due to its widespread use in aerospace, electronics, and industrial applications

Both tapes feature:
 Heat resistance (up to 260°C)
Electrical insulation (H-grade, up to 7,200V)
Chemical resistance (resists solvents, acids, oils)
Clean removal (no residue after high-temp use)

Key Benefits & Differences

1️⃣ Heat Resistance & Thermal Stability

Both can withstand 260°C, but Kapton tape is often tested for aerospace-grade applications, ensuring performance in extreme environments

Polyimide tape is widely used in PCB soldering, lithium battery insulation, and transformer wrapping

2️⃣ Electrical Insulation

Kapton tape (DuPont™) has higher dielectric strength (7,200V+) and is preferred in high-voltage applications

Generic polyimide tape typically offers 5,000V insulation, suitable for consumer electronics and industrial motors

3️⃣ Chemical & Environmental Resistance

Both resist solvents, oils, and acids, but Kapton tape is often used in aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing due to its low outgassing properties

Polyimide tape is common in battery insulation (Li-ion terminals) and PCB masking

4️⃣ Adhesive Types

Kapton tape typically uses silicone adhesive for high-temp stability

Polyimide tape may use acrylic or silicone adhesives, depending on the manufacturer

Top Applications

🔌 Electronics Manufacturing

PCB gold finger masking (Kapton tape preferred for reflow soldering)
Flex circuit reinforcement (both tapes used in foldable devices)

🚀 Aerospace & Automotive

Wire harness insulation (Kapton tape for jet engines & EVs)
Battery terminal protection (polyimide tape for Li-ion packs)

⚡ Energy & Industrial

Transformer insulation (both tapes, but Kapton for high-voltage)
Powder coating masking (polyimide tape for 260°C curing)
